Building Bridges: Bilateral Manager Connections and International Trade

We investigate whether top managers with personal ties to a foreign country facilitate trade that by overcoming bilateral barriers obstruct international business relationships. Using individual managers' nationality, we construct novel database of manager connections. analyze the effects these connections both on firm and level. On level, provide evidence for positive effect exports imports. find destination-specific sales. show this firm-level is especially pronounced institutionally distant destinations, which interpret as bridging gap between dissimilar countries. Furthermore, stronger destinations less developed institutions indicating help created low institutional quality. Moreover, strength also depends characteristics manager. Namely, differs male female managers.Gender discriminating in destination severely downsize pro-trade connections, could give rise an unintended importing gender inequality regarding management positions.
